An unmemorable someone said something to me, which I recall sounding a bit aggressive, like "get a move on it"; the feeling stuck with me (the words didn't) and I soon imagined myself as both the pusher and the receiver of that feeling--since I couldn't remember who had actually said it--and I shouted at myself, "move along!"
So I did.
I think I'm the same guy; painting just became more fun, more personal, more natural. Thanks Unmemorable Someone! Now you have a name.
This will sound stupid, I know it. But while I'm a fan of your work sometimes it stumps me. Like this piece. I can't get my head around it. I can see that it's visually appealing and it's not that its' meaning's too ambiguous, I just need help sometimes.
And your descriptions are always so poetic. I can most of the time figure out what you're on about.. Today's just not my day.
So I was wondering if you could explain to me, in laments terms, what this piece means to you?
I told you it would sound stupid.
Yup, awkward as all hell and totally refreshing. Finally I've done what I ought to have from the get-go (and yet it comes at exactly the moment it should): enjoy painting for painting's sake, where the studio refinement is negated and the vision remains sharp.
Thank you! Ah how good it is to still be supported in my haywire style shifts. Otherwise it'd be tough: still doable, still necessary, but so much tougher.
For the past year I've tried to shift my focus from one element--the face, and how that element inspired the rest of a composition--to a complete whole.
It's still a process, but this was a big step. And I hate to use the word "step"; since every painting is going to be a stepping stone, they might as well all be destinations, too.
I can't tell you what to think of the painting. It's a depiction of a cliché, and yet a cliché that kills me day in and day out. But I can lay out the elements and, if you'd like to take a stab at it, you can draw the links.
Mask that covers, juxtaposition, revealing/revealed, self image, laid out, vulgar, and ugly.
Add in a dash of red and it's clearly a Winston piece.
